For a number of years, the car industry has been subject to a process of concentration. On the one hand, the decrease in the number of independent car manufactors and suppliers is expected to continue until the end of this decade. On the other, there is a steady increase in the number of models and makes, with ever shorter product life cycles. End customers increasingly demand individually tailored products.

The greates challenges to car manufactures and their suppliers are the permant pressure to innovate and the increasing global cost pressures. Restructuring is the order of the day to ensure that the resulting complex structures can continue to be successfully managed in the future.

A deciding factor of success is the seamless integration of suppliers into the product development process against a background of ever higher quality standards. For that reason, the entire value creation chain requires constant analysis and optimization.

Other topics of outstanding importance for the next few years are cost reductions and the optimization of distribution structures. In addition, the challenge remains to open up new markets and develop new revenue and profit sources with the aim of further reducing the traditionally long return on investment (ROI).
